People travel from all over the world to visit “our” park, the Point Reyes National Seashore. Some 2.5 million visitors annually. Kehoe Beach is part of 10-mile Beach that stretches from the point of Point Reyes, the Lighthouse in the south, to McClures Beach in the north. It’s a popular destination known for its high rugged cliffs and a long, exposed wind-swept beach. Although Kehoe Beach is about 30 miles as the crow flies from San Francisco the winding road makes getting there quite a journey through the redwoods of Samuel P. Taylor State Park, historic Olema, the old rail-head of Point Reyes Station, and the bucolic rolling hills of West Marin. And then there is the hike from the road to the beach through the tule marsh that is home to egrets, waterfowl and huge flocks of Redwing Blackbirds. When we go to Kehoe we feel transported out of our everyday. It’s as if we had taken a trip to somewhere far away and yet at the end of the day, we are not really very far from home. Thinking of Kehoe as a vacation destination inspired us to create a series of postcards that would entice visitors to our favorite piece of sand. Dryly humorous, often with a touch of irony is a great description for a martini or for our latest set of postcards from Kehoe Beach. Johannes Itten (1888-1967) was an instructor at the Bauhaus school and was famous for his treatise on color, The Art of Color. His great question "What color is it?" sparks our reverie as we glean plastic from the beach. What green is it — olive, forest, mantis, teal? What blue — baby, navy, cobalt, ultramarine? Color exists in context and is influenced by what color it is next to. The question of "What color is it?" is often asked of us. We answer, "Red, yes, but which red: purple-red, orange-red, light red (pink)." So we've tried to answer the question with this series of photographs titled Chromas. The colors are just as we find them. Simple pieces of color put together in a considered way are the basis of how we go about our work. Colors are like musical tones, keys on a keyboard and when placed compositionally together become like a song. Archival pigment prints on Moab Entrada fine art paper are available.
